Ferrare Dataset

Two airborne lidar systems operated by NASA Langley Research Center have measured aerosol backscattering profiles over various areas of the world. Data are available from a number of experiments listed below in the format:

year; experiment; base(s) of flight operations; location of data; type of aerosol profiles; airborne lidar instrument

1988; Arctic Boundary Layer Experiment (Able-3A); Barrow & Bethel, Alaska; Langley DAAC; RSR; Airborne DIAL
1990; Arctic Boundary Layer Experiment (Able-3B); Hudson Bay, Canada; Langley DAAC; RSR; Airborne DIAL
1991; Pacific Exploratory Mission - West A (PEM-West-A); Guam, Hong Kong, Tokyo; Langley DAAC and GTE web site; RSR; Airborne DIAL
1992; Transport & Atmos. Chem. Near Equator (Trace-A); Brazil, Namibia, S. Africa; Langley DAAC and GTE web site; RSR; Airborne DIAL
1994; Pacific Exploratory Mission - West B (PEM-West-B); Guam, Hong Kong, Tokyo; Langley DAAC and GTE web site; RSR; Airborne DIAL
1995; LASE Validation Experiment; Wallops Island, Virginia; Langley DAAC; ASR; LASE
1996; Tropospheric Aerosol Radiative Forcing Observational Experiment (TARFOX); Wallops Island, Virginia; Langley DAAC; ASR; LASE
1996; Pacific Exploratory Mission - Tropics-A (PEM-Tropics A); Fiji, New Zealand, Tahiti; Langley DAAC and GTE web site; ASR; Airborne DIAL
1997; Southern Great Plains (SGP97) Experiment; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Langley DAAC; ASR; LASE
1997; SASS Ozone and NOx Experiment (SONEX); Azores, Bangor, Shannon; CD-ROM also at Ames; ASR; Airborne DIal
1998; Convection and Moisture Experiment-3; Cocoa Beach, Florida; Langley DAAC by 7/1/99; ASR; LASE

RSR = relative aerosol scattering , ASR = atmospheric scattering ratio

The wavelengths for these measurements are 815 nm (LASE), and 600 and 1064 nm (Airborne DIAL). Relative aerosol scattering profiles are lidar return signals that have been background subtracted, and range square corrected. The atmospheric scattering ratio signals are further processed and are the ratio of total (molecular+aerosol+cloud) scattering/molecular scattering.
